How Does Hypnotherapy Work?

Patanjali Institute promotes the practice of yoga and hypnotherapy, offering a 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training and Hypnotherapy Training course that gives certification to practice both.

In order to help people understand the combination of yoga and hypnotherapy better, we have started a series called Ask a Yoga Teacher, which discusses any questions readers may have about our practice.

In this post, we will answer the question of Lucy from the United States:

A friend of mine wants to quit smoking. Is that maybe possible with hypnotherapy and is it easy to learn?

Dr. Sohail Ebady, the founder of Patanjali Institute and a practicing yoga teacher and hypnotherapist for over 20 years, gives his answer:

Yes, it’s possible.

Hypnotherapy is a healing art that’s several thousand years old. It’s done when the person is in a natural, deep and relaxed state of mind, because it’s when one has good communication with the subconscious mind.

There are many benefits of hypnotherapy, and I have used it to treat a wide range of stress-related, psychological and psychosomatic ailments, as well as self-destructive habits like smoking, alcoholism, drug-addiction, and over-eating among many others.

When I do the sessions, I concentrate a lot on “positive thinking,” so that all the teachings go deep into the subconscious. I believe one of the first side effects of chronic stress reactions is the development of a negative attitude; this negativity has its own negative effects in all the aspects of life.

When the positive attitude grows stronger daily, therefore, the negativity becomes weaker and gradually disappears (this is called the transformation). The individual develops a good image of themselves, improves their self-esteem, and becomes more aware of their abilities and potential. They become motivated to do more, and it’s this powerful motivation that creates further positive changes towards their inner growth. They will begin their journey to become what they want to be.

More than that, I also address those unwanted programs in the subconscious mind, which comes up to the surface level (conscious mind) according to the programming.

Through my sessions, these unwanted programs get deprogrammed slowly day by day. The mental knots and blockages open up, and one after another, as the individual comes out of this cyclical pattern, they experience inner peace and gradually come to a natural flow of regeneration and well-being.

When you undergo our 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training and Hypnotherapy Training course, you will learn how to do self-hypnosis as well as to conduct hypnotherapy sessions on others. With enough practice and supervision, you will soon learn how to help your friend quit smoking as well as any other self-destructive habits.

Wishing you good health and a happy life, and looking forward to meeting you,

Sohail
